CARACAS – The Venezuelan government on Friday released footage of a video that would prove an alleged secret meeting between Chavismo's number two, Diosdado Cabello, and self-proclaimed interim president, Juan Guaidó. According to Nicolás Maduro's government, the two men would have met on the eve of protests in Venezuela that resulted in the Guaidó oath as the country's chief executive. Guayda, in turn, refuses the meeting.
The images show a man whose head is covered by the hood of a coat that, according to Maduro's Minister of Communication, Jorge Rodríguez, would be Juan Guaidó. Behind him is the lawyer Roberto Marrero, a coreligorist from Guaidó. According to Rodríguez, at the supposed meeting, the president of the National Assembly would have promised to maintain dialogue with the government and would have guaranteed that he would not proclaim himself acting president, as he did. last Wednesday.
Faced with Guaido's refusal to attend the so-called meeting, Maduro's minister published footage of the video and said:
– The lie is so short that, in the case of acting deputy Juan Guaidó, they lasted less than 24 hours.
The meeting, he said, took place last Tuesday in a hotel in the east of Caracas, one day before the opposition mobilizations convened by Guaidó. On Thursday, during an interview with the Univision network, Mr Guaidó said that the meeting had not taken place. Already this Friday, according to AFP, he was elusive when he was questioned by reporters about it.
The meeting was first mentioned by Cabello on Wednesday and on Friday when he spoke of the Miraflores Palace, Maduro mentioned it again.
– Here (in the video footage) shows that they have no word – said Rodriguez.
Cabello and Freddy Bernal, also from the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), appear in the register of a closed circuit television. According to the Minister of Communication Maduro, both were invited by Guaidó. Before the footage, government officials asked the self-proclaimed interim president to maintain his refusal to participate in the meeting.
– Mr. President, you choose: go away saying that it's a lie to start making the revelations – threatened Cabello.
Guaidó was recognized as interim president of Venezuela by 17 countries, including Brazil and the United States. Maduro denounces this maneuver as a coup sponsored by Washington, with which he broke political and diplomatic relations.
