The Toyota Yaris hatch has a twin brother: the Etios. Although physically distinct, both share the mechanics and the platform. Despite the similarities of DNA, they have very different personalities. While the former is preoccupied with appearances and has slightly more sophisticated habits, the latter is simpler and more sober.
It is not by chance, a few months after its release, that the Toyota Yaris hatch has far exceeded its brother. Last September, he had sold 2,943 units, against 1,165 of his twin.
Complete and practical interior
The Toyota Yaris hatch has the qualities present in his brother, to which he adds other predicates. It is worth mentioning the interior, which is ample in both cases. At the front, the dimensions of the badpit are virtually the same. However, in the latest model, the legroom of the rear seats is larger due to the more generous wheelbase, similar to that of the sedan version of the Etios. There is also an added benefit: the flat floor, which facilitates the life of the fifth occupant, who also has a three-point belt and a headrest. For a compact, there is plenty of space on board.
The ergonomics of the Toyota Yaris hatch has also evolved, thanks to the more conventional positioning of the instruments, facing the driver. The group has an optimal reading even if you need the coolant thermometer. Another slide is the glove box without lighting.
Correct Performance
Mechanically, the big difference between the Toyota Yaris hatch and the Etios range is in exchange. Instead of the obsolete four-speed gearbox, there is a CVT mechanism similar to the current Corolla. Well adapted to the engine, the transmission responds with agility, while the seven simulated steps break somewhat the monotony typical of this type of system. If the driver wishes, you can change them sequentially, by means of fins on the steering wheel. This is a useful and rare feature among compact cars.
The performance provided by the mechanical set of the Toyota Yaris hatch is far from exciting, but they are not below expectations. In town, there is enough breath to start quickly at the traffic lights or to cope with the climb with a certain disposition. On the road, the model is only fine if it is empty.
Reasonable Consumption
According to AutoPapo, the Toyota Yaris hatch had good fuel economy on the road, but not in town. Fueled with ethanol, the model reached 10.4 km / l in the road cycle and 6.3 km / l in urban areas. It should be noted that the tank contains only 45 liters.
Perhaps because of the traffic conditions, Inmetro's Brazilian Vehicle Labeling Program (PBE) recorded different figures in the second situation, although similar in the first case: 10.6 km / l and 8.9 km / l, respectively, with the same fuel. With gasoline, the PBE indicates 14.4 km / l and 13 km / l, in the order.
The most equipped of the range
The XLS version is the most equipped of the Toyota Yaris range. Therefore, it is also the most expensive: the suggested price is R $ 78,990. Safety features include seven airbags (front, side, curtain and driver's knee), stability and traction controls, Isofix hooks to attach the seats to the rear seat and ABS brakes with EBD.
I like the Brazilian
Between the two twins, one more helpless and the other more sophisticated, it is not difficult to appoint a favorite. The Toyota Yaris hatch retains the qualities of the brother and adds others. Certainly, its prices are higher – Etios hatch values range from $ 49,490 to $ 60,990 – but this is justified by the level of finish and the level of equipment. Judging by the similarities between design and commercial performance, it will not be surprising that one of the Germans "kills" the other in a few years, thus becoming the only Japanese pact in the country.
