Comfort and sportsmanship are often opposite virtues, including motorcycles. At Bonneville, the clbadic line of Triumph combines comfort and ergonomics, which makes the journey very pleasant. Thruxton, in the cafe racer style, lacks these virtues.
The new Speed Twin, which arrives in Brazil in May, is a kind of cross between these models and has managed to combine the best of each. Placed above the Bonneville, will have the price in the house of 50 000 $.
Compared to Thruxton, the Speed Twin weighs 10 kg less (in the case of the R version, the only one offered in Brazil, the difference falls to 7 kg). The interaxle is wider (1,430 mm versus 1,415 mm), as well as the 93.5 mm track angle (compared to Thruxton's 92 mm).
The goal, according to the brand, was to let the motorcycle's behavior be more neutral. Otherwise, the reactions would be too aggressive, especially during turnarounds.
Kayaba suspensions have a 120 mm stroke at the front and back. Without frontal adjustment, they benefited from a firmer calibration, with new springs and more oil, but without compromising comfort.
Agility and Ergonomics
The Speed Twin was quick to evaluate, but did not fight with the pilot's controls when it indicated turning or cornering.
The adoption of the wider and longer handle of the naked Speed Triple and the repositioning of the pedals (38 mm later and 4 mm lower) offer great ergonomics.
In practice, the handlebar allows the driver to maintain the right spine and a more upright posture. Already the pedals leave the legs less retracted. This increases comfort over long distances, with measured sportiness.
The disadvantage of this handlebar lies in the mirrors attached to the ends.
A lighter engine than the Thruxton R
The engine of the Speed Twin is a 1,200 cc twin cylinder. As for Thruxton, it has a lighter crankshaft and an upper compression head, for a power of 97 hp at 6,750 rpm and a torque of 11.4 mkgf at 4,750 rpm. With new engine covers, revised clutch and magnesium covers for controls, the game was 2.5 kg lighter than Thruxton R.
On the winding roads of Mallorca, Spain, the propeller was producing a good couple of rotations. And he was always available for vans without having to slow down. With cylinders in parallel, it does not vibrate and has a regular operation, with linear growth.
The six-speed transmission has smooth, easy couplings and the gear shift works well with the elastic motor. There are three driving modes: rain (rain), normal (road) and sport (Sport). They do not change the power, but rather the discharge curve and throttle opening response.
The ABS system and traction control can be disabled as standard. The Brembo brand front brake includes floating calipers and 305 mm double discs. Behind, the simple disc of 220 mm comes from Nissin.
Clbadic visuals present interesting details
At first glance, there is little difference between the Speed Twin and Bonneville. One is the bench, with a different shape that fits better to the legs in the tank. After a full day of cycling, the comfort of the seat is much greater.
The panel features two badog displays and small digital displays with information such as fuel consumption, odometer and range. The graphic background is different from Bonneville. In the English version, the display is expressed in km / h and counts in miles / hour, which complicates the reading.
The alloy wheels have an unprecedented design and are also lighter. On the side, the mark hid the throttle body, which was exposed under the seat, with a piece of brushed aluminum. Also made of aluminum, the wings are now shorter and unpainted, which gives an air of sportsmanship.
There are other details that stand out. The fuel tank gun has a characteristic racing style from the '60s and' 70s. The two exhaust pipes, one on each side, have a black finish on the muffler and a chrome tip.
