In a statement, the FDA noted that drug approval demonstrates how the advancement of solid scientific research to investigate the ingredients derived from marijuana can lead to important therapies.
"This is an important medical breakthrough. But it is also important to note that this is not an endorsement of marijuana or any of its components. This is the approval of a drug specific based on CBD [canabidiol] for a specific use. And it was based on well-controlled clinical trials evaluating the use of the compound in the treatment of a specific disease, "says the entity's note.
The FDA also noted that the remedy is a purified form of cannabidiol, which must be administered to patients in a reliable dosage form to ensure that people in treatment are getting the expected benefits. "That's how advanced medical science is," concluded the agency.
