The program of the Cuban regime that exports Cuban doctors to other countries in the world has been described as trafficking in persons by a resolution presented in the US Senate Thursday.
The resolution mentions in particular about 8,300 Cuban doctors recently allocated to Brazil under a contract with the Cuban government for the Mais Médicos program, created under the government of former President Dilma Rousseff.
In November, Cuba withdrew its doctors from Brazil after criticizing Jair Bolsonaro, then elected president, who called the program "forced labor". Bolsonaro took office on January 1st.
Bolsonaro at the time criticized the fact that the Cuban government pays most of the salaries paid to doctors. "Recent news from Brazil shows that the Cuban government is taking advantage of its state-sponsored foreign medical missions, which are sold as medical diplomacy, but much more like servitude," Menendez said in a statement.
Relations between the United States and Cuba have been disrupted since Fidel Castro came to power in the 1959 revolution.
