Vatican spokesman, Greg Burke, and his deputy, Paloma García Ovejero, resigned unexpectedly, reports the Associated Press. According to a statement from the Holy See, Pope Francis accepted the resignation Monday (31).
In a publication on Twitter, Burke, who is American, explained that his departure and that of the Spanish Ovejero will take effect as of this Tuesday (1st).
Paloma and I resigned on January 1 st. In this period of transition in Vatican communications, we believe that it is better that the Holy Father be completely free to form a new team.

The couple's resignation comes a few weeks after the pope appointed an Italian journalist and personal friend, Andrea Tornielli, to the position of director of communications writing at the Catholic Church's headquarters.
To temporarily replace the spokesman, the pontiff chose a member of the Vatican press office, Alessandro Gisotti.
