"We will be financially responsible", according to the future Minister of Finance of Mexico – International

Carlos Urza wants to convince the financial markets that a possible left-wing government of Mexican Andres Manuel Lpez Obrador does not oppose private investment and is not financially responsible.

His main job, since it would be the finance minister if Lpez Obrador, favorite in the polls, is the winner of the July 1 election.

"We need more private investment, we need to attract more investment from foreign companies, because it is often they who bring the knowledge," said AFP, an academic of the Technological University of Monterrey

Urza, Master in Mathematics, Ph.D. in Economics and longtime Lpez Obrador: he was his secretary of finance between 2000 and 2003, when the current candidate was mayor of Mexico City .

In an interview with AFP, he detailed what Lpez Obrador would do with the energy reform – emblematic privatization of the government of Enrique Pea Nieto – and a new political airport in Mexico City.

– What is your diagnosis of the Mexican economy?

During this century, Mexico is experiencing very weak growth. We are much weaker in public investment.

The key: if we can not have the amount

The expenditure (of the government) very bad, probably by incompetence, corruption, or both.

– How was the relationship of Lpez Obrador's economic team with international investors?

Portfolio investors know that the economic outlook, but they want to be badured that Banco do México (central), for example, will remain autonomous because it is in the Constitution.

They also ask what happens to the exchange rate (…), but there is no problem either because the Bank of Mexico and we are totally in favor of & # 39; 39, a free floating regime.

– There were harsh remarks about his future role as finance minister, stating that he had little experience and that he was not well. known. How do you handle this type of mistrust?

I have my team, people of the first level. I was Finance Secretary of the Government of Mexico City and I have more experience than me, for example, Luis Videgaray (current Chancellor) when he was Treasury Secretary.

Lpez Obrador said that if the contracts already signed are correct, we will respect them.

– Can we give as a fact that the new energy reform offers will be paused? The bidding process will be stopped and we will badyze what we are going to do, take a closer look at the situation of the oil fields that have not yet been auctioned, and then we will decide.

So we can decide never to do, like deciding to follow with a lower or even normal pace, as long as it is done jointly with Petrleos Mexicanos.

At this point, I think the candidate and also the people who are close to him are more and more convinced that the airport is probably not such a bad idea, in the end, by technical issues.

He was also considering a concession for those who are now entrepreneurs and who are building the new airport. It was not decided and it was not even rejected (using the military airport) Santa Luca, but I think that it is now suspended more for the new airport .

– Do you dare to set a goal for economic growth?

There is no other way than to increase the investment. We will have to earn more, grow more, restore trust, end corruption in Mexico, and if we can make quality public investment and all others are constant, I'm not afraid to say we can grow at the rate of 5% per year, but once we have already stabilized (in three or four years), not before.
