Once the motion is approved, a 14-day period begins. If, during this period, the current government can garner a new majority and approve a "confidence motion," Theresa May remains in power. If, however, another party accepts the motion, a new Prime Minister is elected.
- But if neither the current government nor new coalitions form a majority in this 14-day period, new general elections will have to be held.
There is a minimum period of 25 working days before this new general election.
What should happen in Parliament?
It is expected that the discussion on the motion of mistrust will begin at noon local time (10 am, Brasilia time) and will last six hours.
For Labor Leader Jeremy Corbyn, the vote will allow the House of Commons to "rule on the flagrant incompetence of this government".
But there are signs that May must survive the vote.

The acronym for Foster now has 10 seats in the House of Commons – the Conservatives have 317 and the workers, 256. The Conservatives and the DUP therefore hold most of the seats (327 out of 650).
To BBC reporters, Foster said legislators "were acting in the best interests of the UK" by refusing Theresa May's agreement for Brexit. But she adds, "We are going to give the government the space it needs to develop a plan that can guarantee better conditions."
