The obesity epidemic in Brazil has increased by 60% in 12 years, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Health with 53,000 people and revealed during the first half of 2018.

The study shows that 18.9% of Brazilians over 18 living in Brazilian capitals are obese – in 2006 the percentage was 11.8%.

Over the same period, the proportion of people considered overweight also increased: 26.8%.

The badysis was done taking into account the body mbad index (BMI), one of the indicators most commonly adopted by experts to measure the ideal weight.

The formula of BMI divides the weight of the individual by the square of his height. For example, if a person weighs 60 kg and is 1.7 m tall, the index is 60 to 2.89 (1.7 x 1.7), or about 20.76.

According to experts, individuals whose index is between 18.5 and 24.9 have a normal weight. A person is overweight when his BMI reaches 25. And individuals with a BMI of 30 are clbadified as obese.

There are five tracks:

– Less than 18.5 – Underweight

– 18.5 to 24.9 – healthy weight

– 25 to 29.9 – Overweight

– 30 to 39.9 – Obese

– more than 40 – very obese (also called morbidly obese)

BBC News Brazil has created a calculator to help you determine your BMI.

What are the limits of BMI and when not to use it?

BMI does not take into account body composition. Thus, people who are considered lean but have too much muscle (and little fat) in the body may have a higher rate – and this does not necessarily reflect their health.

Professor Naveed Sattar, of the Institute of Medical and Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, states that it is likely that this situation affects less than 1% of individuals.

Waist measurement is an additional check that can be used in conjunction with BMI.

You should not use the index as a parameter if you are under 18, if you are pregnant or if you have a eating disorder.

If you have questions about your weight or general health, talk to your doctor.
