A monkey from the São Paulo Zoo in the southern part of the city was diagnosed with yellow fever on Friday night (8). According to the mayor and the state government, the howler monkey is alive, isolated and under surveillance.
State and municipal governments recommend that only persons who are immunized against the disease should go to the botanical garden and the zoo.
After confirming the diagnosis, the municipal administration set up a working group on the vaccination of visitors and the population of the surrounding area, where vaccination coverage against yellow fever is currently 60%.
The zoo is surrounded by the neighborhoods of Cursino, Jabaquara and Sacomã, which cover on average 53% of the territory and have an estimated population of 600 000 inhabitants.
The municipality will vaccinate by flying stations and from house to house within a radius of 300 meters around the tourist point. The estimated distance from the flight area of vectors – wild yellow fever is transmitted by Sabethes or Haemagogus mosquitoes.
Throughout the capital, immunization coverage is 77%. The vaccine is available in the post routine of the public health network and takes ten days to provide effective protection.
The Municipal Department of Health states that all Paulistas should be vaccinated against yellow fever if they are not yet immunized.
It is important to warn people in any part of the city, especially those who live or visit rural, forest or riparian areas, where vegetation is dense.
The vaccine is indicated for people 9 months of age and older. They should consult the doctor to find out if the vaccine is needed for HIV-positive and transplanted patients.

Since 2016, the Secretariat has intensified its actions to control yellow fever in the state through monitoring ecological corridors, epidemiological surveillance and vaccination. In addition to strengthening the strategies in the areas clbadically clbadified on the vaccination card, the indicator areas of the vaccine were gradually expanded even before the arrival of the virus.
This occurred in the metropolitan area of Campinas and Rota dos Mananciais, still in 2017, as well as the realization of the campaign in early 2018, which covered 54 municipalities of Baixada Santista, Vale do Paraíba and Grande ABC, leading to the entire state. .
In the last two years, more than 15 million people have been vaccinated against yellow fever in that state. This number is twice as high as the vaccination of the previous decade, with 7 million people vaccinated between 2006 and 2016.
