A new Brazilian study suggests that infection with the zika virus also causes complications for men. According to the study, led by infectious agent Vivian Avelino-Silva, of the University of São Paulo (USP) School of Medicine, this infection can cause infertility.

Fourteen men infected with the virus in 2016 participated in the study. Five performed sperm examination and four of the results were outside the normality parameters established by the World Health Organization (WHO)

. "This suggests that there might be an effect of zika infection that we do not know yet., Which is a prolonged, perhaps even permanent, change in infertility among men, "said Vivian in an interview with Agência Brasil.

However, the study should be viewed with caution because it is not yet conclusive. The scientist pointed out that the number of volunteers was low and that the team had not examined these five men before the infection to prove that the change had been made by zika.

"But studies on animals already suggest similar results, and we think work is important for a study with more men," she said.
