A new study, sponsored by the Institute of Tropical Medicine at the University of São Paulo, suggests that Zika virus infection can also lead to complications for men. According to the study conducted by the infectious disease Vivian Avelino-Silva, Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (USP), zika can be at the origin of infertility.
Fourteen men infected with the virus in 2016 participated in the study. Five of them underwent sperm examination and, in four other cases, the results were outside the normality parameters established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
"We observed that among the five men in whom we performed sperm collection, four had an extraordinary value, given the normality with the WHO reference. Zika infection could have an unknown effect, namely a prolonged or even permanent change in infertility in men, "said Vivian in an interview with Agência Brasil .
The study is not conclusive and emphasizes the need to conduct new research. The researcher noted that the sample was small and that the team had not examined these five men before the infection to prove that the modification had been made by the zika.
"We have not been able to prove it, but animal studies already suggest similar results, so we think the result is important for more men to study," said the researcher of the Department of Infectious Diseases. Parasite.
